Today Mayor Zenaida Moya told 7NEWS that the contracts for sanitation companies SEL and BML are, again, almost a done deal. As we've reported, the council was looking at almost halving the contracts to these companies. Now after much negotiation, Moya says the contracts will be signed shortly.

Zenaida Moya, Mayor of Belize City
"We have been in constant dialogue with the sanitation companies and I must say it is a team effort on both sides and we have already submitted the proposal, the final draft proposal to them. They have to review that and go ahead and agree. In the case of SEL it is only two minor areas that they would like just a little bit of, a revisiting of it, and immediately as that is dealt with, they will be able to sign and we can go ahead."

Alfonso Noble,
What about BML?

Zenaida Moya,
"In the case of BML, I believe that the same holds true. I believe that we have been at some level of dialogue with each other and I can't blame them for that. So it is the same area they want looked into and the Deputy will be meeting with them and see how we can deal with that very quickly."

Alfonso Noble,
How long do you think before we have this matter behind us and fully settled?

Zenaida Moya,
"Well Alfonso I would want that to be resolved immediately."

Alfonso Noble,
Has the council been paying these companies what they are due or are they being paid a renegotiated contract price?

Zenaida Moya,
"Yes they are being paid according to the new amounts that we have agreed upon so far."

There is still no exact date as to when the contracts will be finalized.
