It's still BTL, but tonight that "T" stands for Telemedia, not telecommunications. That's the effect of the BTL Vesting Bill which was passed by the Senate yesterday and signed into law today. It was signed this afternoon by the Governor General and with that signing, Belize Telecommunications Limited established in 1987 is dissolved and struck from the Register of Companies, and Belize Telemedia Limited is enacted, assuming all assets and liabilities of the former BTL.
Most significantly, BTL's Articles of Association which was designed to protect the interests of small shareholders has been discarded along with the original company. The Opposition has said it is unconstitutional but the government has said it is the only way to dislodge minority shareholder Jeffrey Prosser.
