It’s a basic commodity but over the weekend flour was a scarce commodity. When we checked this afternoon – both Extra House and Brodies were out of flour. Public’s Supermarket had flour but they too ran out over the weekend. ADM Belize Mills Limited is the sole authorized importer of flour in the country and its manager Phillip Millikin says there is no shortage. In fact Miliken says there is more flour in Belize than there ever was. He says they have shipped out 4,875 packs of flour.

As we’ve reported – the flour shortage was caused by a worldwide shortage of wheat. We should note that according to a statutory instrument passed in December of 2007, the maximum retail price for a pound of flour is 60 cents. Anything above that could be considered as price gouging.
