The Belize Hotel Association held its biannual meeting today at Old Belize. Guest speaker was the Ministry of Tourism’s Chief Executive Officer Michael Singh who told the industry stakeholders about government’s plan to jump start the sagging tourism industry, specifically the overnight sector which is declining – as much as 11% according to the latest figures. And apparently he told them what they wanted to hear because following the meeting NHA’s Executive Director Daedra Haylock was optimistic about more connections to Belize.
Daedra Haylock, Exec. Dir. – Belize Hotel Association
“The Ministry of Tourism has been really trying to work on this with the aviation development committee, they were able to report on some of the increased offers that they are able to get from Continental and American Airlines, they were able to report on the airline coming to Belize from Cancun and what that means for Belize and particularly for the sister relationship we have with Mexico and the tourist and the popularity of Cancun, to be able to have a direct link to Belize increases the possibility of us being able to latch on to that and have a multi-destinational product that we can market to tourists. And so there were some real successes that he was able to report. He talked about the tourism trust and what that means and what they are trying to do to improve our parks, improve our destinations locally and that kind of stuff.”
The Belize Hotel Association represents 39% of the hotels in Belize.
