When the Department of Transport implemented the new tint regulations, they gave vehicle owners 40 days extra to comply or face a 500 dollar penalty.

But butane companies have now gotten three times that - about 120 days - to comply with new regulations for their industry and, still, none of the large importers are in compliance. After a long and stony silence, the Bureau of Standards has confirmed that only 14 Butane Suppliers are fully compliant with the scale regulations while 35 - including all five major importers and their agents are either non compliant or only partially compliant.

And so what's the bureau of standards doing about it? Well, even though these suppliers are in flagrant and sustained violation of the law, enforcement and prosecution will take some time. A spokesperson for the bureau says they are gathering physical evidence and statements -which must then be submitted to the DPP - who will then follow up with prosecution.

So, it will take some time, which must fit just right for those butane suppliers who are only too happy to continue to sell by the meter, in flagrant violation of the law - because the enforcement side of the law lacks teeth.
