But there's also been some projects that don't seem directly connected to tourism, like Mahogany Street Marketplace, or the signed MOU to repair the Accident and Emergency Department at the KHMH. For the latter, those renovations would normally be funded by the Ministry of Health - the former by the City Council.
But, instead BTB came through with the bag….
However, Mahler explained that those projects do affect tourism as well.
Anthony Mahler, Minister of Tourism
"They do. The other we had a road traffic accident on the George Price Highway, seven tourists had to be rushed to the emergency room, and there's always health tourism, but the infrastructure for health is important. Nobody thinks about it was, but - sewer, most of Belize isn't connected to a sewer system. It's expensive, I know, but with the natural assets we have we cannot be pumping our waste into septics or into holes or into whatever we pump it in. It's contaminating our environment. There is so much work to be done, if you want to go to Caracol there need to be infrastructure to accommodate people, rather than just looking at the site itself, you have to have interpretive centers, you have to have gift shops, you have to have all of these things, why can't I get a little replica of Caracol or Xunantunich, all of these things go into monetizing tourism and reaching our full potential."
