And from the Senate Special Select Committee to the Sugar Industry Commission of Inquiry... In April when we asked the PM for an update on the COI which was expected to begin it's work 30 days after signing the commercial agreement, he told us that BSI had already indicated that they will participate in the inquiry but some fine tuning was needed to meet their company's right to privacy. When asked for an update today, the Minister Of Agriculture said that they are making progress just not as fast as they had hoped:
Jose Mai, Minister of Agriculture
"It always gone through some level of complications. Well, the last thing I met virtually with the commissioners, and they were prepared to come to Belize and that was last 2 weeks. So I think that they are supposed to be in the country just about any time now, remember that the commissioners that we selected were from my Mauritius one from here. But yes, I also contributed two names from people."
"I think one is, I think one from South Africa and the other one was someone other country. But we we accepted those also. And so I think the little there was a little hiccup there with the ones that they recommended, but we finally got the contacts on and in contact with them so that they can join the team in Belize here."
"Has there been any discussion with the Millers and the other associations in terms of them being on board with the Commission?"
"My team has met with all associations although we are accused that we did not meet with them initially, that could have been the case, but everybody now has been contacted. We have shared terms of reference with them. As a matter of fact, ASR did contribute to somebody's terms of reference and they also suggested two persons to the commission."
"So I'm happy for that because the they they helped in designing. They added a few a few lines to the terms of reference and they contributed the names of the two persons that are also in the commission. So I think we're going in the right direction is not going as fast as I would want it to go, but it's moving."
