Earlier on in the newscast, we told you about a prison warden sent to jail because he didn't want to testify in court, but what does a policeman get for standing up against the commanding officer of Eastern Division? Well on Friday, Constable Elmer Nah got sent to jail.
That's right, 7NEWS has received credible reports that on Friday, OCED Assistant Commissioner Maureen Leslie tangled with Constable Nah as she presided over a meeting at the Queen Street Police Station's canteen. Constable Nah shouted that he couldn't hear her, which caused some of the officers to laugh. Believing that the senior officer was being fun of, second in charge of patrol branch, Inspector Chester Williams reportedly told him to get out of the meeting. He resisted at first, but eventually left the meeting and went downstairs.
After the meeting Leslie called him into an office for a private meeting. That, we are told, didn't go well and Inspector Williams reportedly ordered Constable Nah to leave the office and when he refused a corporal and sergeant removed Nah from the office and threw him into a detention cell. He was still in uniform, and still on duty but was made to share a room with common criminals. No reason was given for his detention, but he was held at the detention cell from about 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
And while 7NEWS has confirmed that Nah was in the cell, when we first got the information on Friday, Inspector Chester Williams flatly denied it, and said only that Nah had been, "spoken to." We now assume that speaking happened while he was in the cell.
