It took the court a month and a week before it could pass sentence of the three men who had been found guilty of the murder of San Pedro resident Jairu Perez. Despite mitigation pleas on behalf of Francis Eiley by Jan Mohammed who described Eiley as a kind guy who wouldn't go around hurting people; Eiley along with Ernest Savery and Lenton Polonio were sentenced to life imprisonment. On November 22 of 2002 the three men entered the home of elderly San Pedro resident Jairu Perez where they beat him to death with a crowbar. Because no firearm was used, it was a Class B murder, which does not carry a mandatory death penalty. The motive for the crime is believed to have been robbery, but Perez caught them in the act and was killed.
