An 18-month-old infant was knocked down and killed in front of his home this morning. It's a truly terrible occurrence that all involved describe as nothing more than a tragic accident.

At around 10 am Jarin Sankey was on Pelican Street just outside his home when a taxi hit him. Shawn lamb, a family friend, was driving the cab and reversing out of the yard when he hit Jarin. The family tells 7NEWS that Jarin was standing behind Lamb's car when he was hit and they also tell us the vehicle did not run over the child. Rather he was simply knocked over with enough force enough to cause the fatal injuries. Jarin died at the KHMH a short while later from those injuries. The driver who is well known to the family and was leaving from the family home when the incident occurred, has not yet been charged. After the incident Lamb himself was admitted to the hospital suffering from what police describe as extreme trauma, his car however has been impounded.

The child's mother Denise Sankey told 7NEWS she is not interested in pursing charges. The police however say the family has no say in criminal charges and the case file will be sent to the DPP for a decision. We note that it was exactly two weeks ago tonight that baby Jarin's uncle, Delrick Sankey, was murdered and his body dumped on the Northern Highway. His uncle's murder is still unsolved while the Sankey family prepares to bury little Jarin.
