Today Marvis Espinoza became a father for the first time but the 19 year old received the news via his cell phone at the KHMH. He was in the hospital awaiting surgery for a broken jaw which he claims was broken by a rogue corporal in Orange Walk town on Friday night. Today from his bed in the KHMH, Espinoza who once dreamt of becoming a cop told Keith Swift he became entangled with the cops after a dispute over a cell phone.
Marvis Espinoza,
"They intercepted me on the way when I was going home and when he grabbed me I dropped my phone. I dropped my phone and he wanted to continue fight with me but I didn't pay the man no mind, I was just relaxing and chilling. So I continued to go and he came up to me with the police officers and I told the policemen that he took my phone and I want my phone. The police didn't pay me any mind. The people around saw when another police patrol pulled up and they come out, they were the boy's family, and they took off their numbers and thing. I wasn't paying them much mind so the policeman come and after that he asked me why I was calling his family a thief. Same time he said he just punched me in my mouth and beat me up. He didn't stop, he just punched, punched, and knock me up in my head with his hands. After that he choked me and threw me against the wall and said he will kill us young boys. I didn't say anything as I was just trying to struggle and after that some other policeman intercept when they saw he was going too far and told him to calm down."
"For real he took my phone and all I was doing was asking him back for it. I went to the police (for help). It doesn't make any sense for you to go to the police and you ask for help and this is the way it turns out to be. I am in here taking a broken jaw surgery. I am not happy."
Keith Swift,
What is the situation with your jaw?
Marvis Espinoza,
"I am talking but my jaw is broke. My mandible is broke; the left side of the mandible is broken in the x-ray. It is broken like it is just bruk because of the blow, which I suffered to the left side of my face. "
Keith Swift,
And you were going to these officers for help?
Marvis Espinoza,
"Yes I have to go back to the same police officers for help. The same police officers who broke your jaw you have to go back to them for help. That is not a fair situation."
Keith Swift,
You are in the hospital right now and you recently became a father. You haven't seen your new daughter yet right?
Marvis Espinoza,
"This is the next thing, I am in hospital and then I got my common-law wife in Orange Walk giving birth to my baby. In which way can I actually help she if the policemen did this to me. How can I actually be there for she when I am supposed to be the main one around more than anybody else 'cause she would appreciated if I was there, not my parents because my parents won't comfort her as much as me. So this is things you go through because of the twist law of Belize."
An x-ray confirmed that indeed his jaw was broken. He underwent surgery this afternoon and should be released on Friday, which is when he will be well enough to travel to Orange Walk to see his new daughter for the first time. He plans to file a complaint with the Police Department and the Ombudsman.
