The news gets worse for 25-year-old Mark Gardiner as he is in jail tonight accused of the attempted murder of two police officers. Gardiner was yesterday arraigned in Magistrate's Court for those two counts of attempted murder, four counts of aggravated assault, one count of damage to property, and one count of wounding.
On Monday we first reported that Gardiner was shot by police as he fled a shooting in the Lake Independence area on Friday night. Zelda Usher and Camisha Young told police that they were caught in the cross fire of a shootout between Gardiner and an unidentified man at the corner of Nargusta and Hondo Streets. The shots shattered the windshield on the Mitsubishi Mirage they were in and injured Camisha's right leg which is why there was the added charge of wounding.
Police responded to the scene and that's when Constables Joel Grinage and Akbar Swazo set chase. The officers claim Gardiner fired back. Gardiner was hit in his right leg and taken to the KHMH. Though they claim he fired at them police didn't recover any gun on Gardiner. He was taken to the KHMH and as we reported on Monday he was supposed to have been released into police custody but instead he walked out. We now know he then went back into the hospital for further treatment.
Today in court Gardiner claimed that when he went back for treatment, police snatched him out of the hospital. He also claimed police took him on the road and beat him. Presiding Magistrate Sharon Fraser asked police to prove Gardiner was removed with protocol. Still today Gardiner was denied bail and is tonight at the Hattieville Prison.
