Today, a police constable became the second cop to be charged for murder in 2005. Police Constable Burton Caliz is charged for the fatal of shooting Leroy Pilgrim in San Pedro on the night of February 12th, 2004.
PC Caliz was originally arraigned for manslaughter but last week the DPP's office made known its intention to upgrade that charge to murder. He was supposed to appear before a judge today to have the murder charge read to him but because his attorney wasn't present it didn't happen. We however understand that he was taken into custody and remanded to the Hattieville Prison.
Pilgrim's family called his death an outright execution while police say he was shot during a pursuit.
PC Caliz is the second cop this year to have a manslaughter charge upgraded to murder. Both shootings occurred in the line of duty but apparently it is the opinion of the DPP that the use of force was unjustified.
