This evening at a small graveside ceremony with family and other close friends, Baby Jahvyn Casey was buried in Belmopan. But the controversy over his death doesn't look like it'll be going away anytime soon.
As we reported last night, Baby Jahyyn, was born 6 months premature last week and lived for three hours. The deceased baby boy seen here in the hands of his mother was preserved and kept for some days after by his deeply traumatized mother, 31 year old Kaila Nunez. The family alleges that this expecting mother was roughed up and detained by police for 56 hours on the weekend of June 25th. She went into premature labor shortly after her release. Kaila's family says she has been trying, failingly, to cope with the loss.
Today the United Democratic Party's Women's Group called what happened an outrage. UDP-NOW says there can be no excuses and Kaila's incident is not isolated. The group claims that the current administration has bred a culture inside the Police Department that pits the police against civilians. UDP-NOW sympathized with the Nunez family and called on the Minister of Home Affairs to ensure it never happens again. The Police Internal Affairs Department has an ongoing investigation. The officers remain on active duty.
