A cyclist was mowed down and killed by a 10-wheeler tow truck last night but his family says another person, a hit and run driver is to blame.
Around 7 pm, 50-year-old Hubert Sterling Sr. was riding on Central American Boulevard near the traffic lights at Vernon street when he was run over by a tow truck driven by 67 year old Hector Hylton. Sterling died in surgery at the KHMH but before he passed he was able to speak to his son Hubert Sterling Jr.
Hubert Jr. told us today what his father told him.
Hubert Sterling Jr., Victim's Son
"He told me that when he was riding on the Boulevard that he was crushed by a tow truck. He told me that a small car hit him first and then he went under the tow truck and the tow truck ran over his two legs and he just laid down on the sidewalk. He was in pain and he said the car that bounced him didn't stop, it just continued.
After the accident he didn't get up and walked, he crawled and to me he seemed like he wasn't going to die because he was bright and everything. But the x-rays showed that he got severely injured, his two feet and toes and he died during surgery.
I just want the person who bounced him to come forth. We are not the type of people to take action against them, we just want them to take up their responsibility."
The family says they don't wish for police to pursue charges against Hylton. They are asking for the driver of the other car to turn himself in. Similarly they don't want criminal charges, only consideration from the driver. Police say investigations continue.
