His family claimed he was the victim of a hit and run by a Mexican Navy vessel but today the Belize Police Department called the death of 18-year-old Jorge Adrian Cantun a tragic swimming accident.
As we reported last night, Cantun was swimming in the Rio Hondo River near the Belize-Mexico Border on Monday afternoon with his 17-year-old girlfriend when he came in contact with a passing Mexican Navy vessel. Cantun's family claims that the vessel ran over him and ran, but Belizean authorities are saying that the Navy vessel made no direct contact with Cantun.
Instead Belize Police say the passing vessel created ripple waves which sent Cantun into deeper waters. Police suspect that is when Cantun hit his head on one of the support beams for the bridge.
Cantun's body was retrieved by Mexican authorities and transported to a Mexican Hospital where a post mortem certified that he drowned. Cantun was buried yesterday in Santa Clara Village.
