Appearing in court this morning alongside the 5 prisoners was Steve Smith. As we first reported last night Smith was charged for harboring Robert Hill the most dangerous of the 6 escapees. Hill was recaptured early yesterday morning and police found him hiding under a bed in Smith's Oleander Street home. This morning in court Smith pleaded not guilty to the charge of harboring a fugitive. He was granted and is tonight on $1,000 bail plus a surety in the same amount.
Yesterday Smith's family told 7NEWS that Robert Hill simply ran into Smith's home to elude the police and that Steve Smith had nothing do with it. For their part, police point out that Smith is no saint and is fresh out of jail after serving time for drug trafficking.
