A 31-year-old man was today sentenced to 6 years in prison for stealing a cell phone.
On September 23 of 2004 Ingrid Avilez reported to police that she was asleep in her house when she awoke to someone pulling on her private parts. She says she had placed a cell phone in her underwear and when she woke up, it was gone.
Avilez was able to identify the culprit and this morning Dwight Cherrington made a brief appearance in Chief Magistrate Lord's court. But by the time his case was called up he had absconded. A committal warrant was issued and the case continued this afternoon but he did not show up. Lord then found Cherrington guilty of burglary and because of having a history of crime including 18 previous convictions of the same nature, he was sentenced to 6 years in prison even though he was nowhere to be found.
