He worked as the caretaker for a Cayo Farm, but 27-year-old Daniel Santos Diaz Hernandez was also doing work as a weapons maker. Acting on intelligence from the Special Branch, the Special Patrol Unit descended on a farm 2 miles south of Esperanza Village. Police searched Diaz Hernandez's trailer home and found this hand made 9-millimeter pistol under his bed. And when they searched his pocket, they found a single round of 9-millimeter ammunition.
Tucked away inside the trailer, they found this assortment of metal pipes, metal springs, a rifle pin, hacksaw, files, small amounts of gunpowder and pellets. They also found an Uzi-toy gun which police believe he would have adapted into a real weapon. He has been charged for possession of a firearm and ammunition, and more charges are expected to follow.
Police have yet to close their investigation and have not decided if they will bring charges against the farm owner, 54-year-old Virgilio Requena. Police did not say if Diaz Hernandez has a military background in another Central American country.
