Just over a year ago, on April 16th, 2005 Norman Mitchell was accused of trying to kill his girlfriend Carla Martin by slitting her throat. Today Norman Mitchell was sentenced in the Supreme Court.
He was originally charged with attempted murder but pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of grievous harm. In a statement from the dock Mitchell told the court he was sorry for what happened and that it was an accident. He continued by asking the judge for leniency.
In passing sentence Justice Troadio Gonzalez took into consideration the plea as well as mentioning that Mitchell had 32 previous convictions. He noted that those for criminal offences took place in the 80's when Mitchell was a young man while some drug related convictions followed in the 90's. After weighing all that, he sentenced Mitchell to serve 6 years in prison.
