Her mother is a social worker and her father a police officer but last night none of them could've stopped their pre-teen daughter from killing herself. Just one week before her graduation from standard six 12-year-old Kiara Cahun shot herself with her father's gun at their home on San Francisco Street in Orange Walk Town. The girl's mother Camy Cahun heard the gunshot in the bedroom and went in to find the child with a gunshot wound to the chest. She died shortly after.
What caused it? Well no one can quite say, but just minutes earlier Kiara was scolded by her mother for coming home late from school. Kiara apparently took the reprimand seriously and she went looking for her father's gun. He is Corporal Vidal Cahun and he left his.38 Smith and Wesson service revolver, as he customarily does, fully loaded in the bedroom. It is believed she then pointed the gun to her chest and fired a single shot. Police recovered Cahun's firearm with four live rounds and one expended shell. Only Kiara and her mother were inside the home at the time of the incident.
Police are investigating to determine if negligence on the corporal's part was a factor in the suicide.
