The University of Belize has responded to reports that it has been trying to cover up the case of rape that occurred at the University of Belize dormitory. A press release by the University says that two days after the incident occurred, the President instituted an investigation. The release goes on to say that the school called in the police but that the young women involved did not want to pursue charges.

The statement says that it was not until Friday that the victims chose to give a police report. This morning the president of the University discredited the gruesome reports of the incident reported in The Reporter newspaper.

As for the alleged perpetrators, they have been suspended following the victims making their reports. The University is however not clearing itself from blame stating_: "the university acknowledges that strict dorm rules were not in place at the time of the incident."

Information to 7NEWS is that alcohol was involved, specifically vodka and tequila, and only one of the young ladies is able to identify her attacker. The other who was inebriated says she cannot identify who raped her. Police, however are relying on a witness who was passing by the room and saw what was happening. Police are also relying on physical evidence gathered from the scene.
