He won't have to spend time in jail but Glen Rivero Sr. will have to pay a stiff fine for knocking down and killing a teenager in 2004. A jury convicted Rivero last week of causing death by careless conduct for the death of 18-year-old Dwayne Francis. This morning Justice Adolph Lucas fined the former traffic warden $18,000.
$8,000 of that amount goes to the court and the remaining $10,000 goes to the family of the deceased. Rivero has until November 8th to pay the court fine. And when he is through paying that amount, he'll have 2 years to pay the family their $10,000. If he fails to pay, he will be jailed.
At sentencing yesterday, Rivero's attorney Dickie Bradley spoke about the good things Rivero did as a traffic officer and noted that Rivero only receives $83 pension and has been certified unfit to work. The court also took into consideration a victims' impact statement from Dwayne Francis's mother.
On August 19th of 2004 Francis was riding his bicycle on the Northern Highway when he knocked down by an Isuzu Trooper driven at the time by Rivero. Rivero has vowed to appeal the fine, not the conviction.
