A mother was viciously murdered, and possibly raped, in front of her two young children in Belmopan. Police aren’t sure when the murder occurred but yesterday evening the body of 23 year old Velma Copo, a Honduran national, was found in her home on St. Mathew Street in San Martin Village.
Police estimate that Copo, seen here in this picture courtesy our colleagues at Plus TV in Belmopan, was stabbed as many as 29 times and her throat was also slit. Copo was last seen alive on Tuesday evening when she went to buy at a store in the village. The grisly discovery was made by a neighbor around 4 yesterday evening.
Copo’s 18-month-old daughter and 3-year-old son were in the house with their dead mother’s body. Police believe it was a crime of passion, most likely jealousy. There is also evidence to suggest she may have been sexually assaulted. Police are seeking three male suspects. They also believe a female was involved.
