And while there’s been all that ruction in the city, there was a grisly murder in the west on Thursday night. At 8:20, police received a report of a car that had crashed into a light pole between miles 68 and 69 on the San Ignacio to Benque Road.
But it turns out that it wasn’t a car crash; it was a murder. 40-year-old Alfredo Howe was in the back seat dead. He had been stabbed multiple times to the throat, chin, chest and arms. Police found two blood stained knives in the vehicle, which as shown in this photo from the Cayo Star was not licensed or insured. According to The Star, the vehicle is the property of his brother Lionel who lives in Mexico.
Information to 7NEWS suggests that Howe, who owns a popular bar in Benque, may have been killed in Benque.
The theory is that his killers were taking his body to San Ignacio to dispose of it when they encountered a police checkpoint just outside of San Ignacio. They ran that checkpoint, and sped towards San Ignacio. Of course, police at the checkpoint had no vehicle so they couldn’t pursue. But the men in the car kept racing towards San Ignacio which is when they lost control crashed into the lamppost.
Police only responded when they got the report of an accident, and the men were able to escape into the night.
Interestingly, Howe had not been robbed; he still had a cell phone, jewelry and $300 in cash on him. Police have made no arrests and cannot say what the motive is.
