A hit and run driver killed a cyclist last night. It occurred just before 7 pm at the entrance to Orange Walk Town near the bypass – between miles 55 and 56 on the Northern Highway. That’s where police say 48-year-old Daniel Diaz was riding his bike when he was mowed over by a driver. He was half a mile from his home in Trial Farm Village. His longtime friend and former co-worker Edgar Cocom was returning from Corozal last night when he happened on the accident scene. He told us this afternoon little did he know that it would be the scene of his friend Daniel Diaz’s death.

Edgar Cocom, Friend of Deceased
“We were coming, we were coming from Corozal. My brother and I were coming from Corozal, we went to leave my parents, and by the way we saw the accident and we stopped and we actually recognized the body. We recognized the body and we saw that in reality who it was. This guy he used to work with us in San Pedro.

We didn’t recognize the face, only the body. By the way he was dressed we managed to recognize the body because couple hours before the accident we saw him, we saw him and we actually just said hello to him and we headed to Corozal to left my parents.

He knocked him down and I don’t know what kind of driver is that.”

Keith Swift,
What do you want to say to the driver who did this?

Edgar Cocom,
“Even though I say for him to give up himself or something, I doubt it. I doubt he will give up himself.”

Diaz’s family doesn’t know where he was headed and the last time he was seen alive he was intoxicated. The driver who knocked him down fled and is still on the run tonight. Police are asking your help identifying that driver. Daniel Diaz is survived by his wife and three children. Anyone with information on who ran him over and left him to die is asked to contact the nearest police station or Crime Stoppers at 0-800-922-TIPS. There is a cash reward if a tip to Crime Stoppers leads to an arrest.
