He was originally charged for the kidnap, brutal rape, and sodomy of his ex-girlfriend but he went on trial for kidnapping and today a jury convicted 26 year old George Mathews of only common assault. The incident occurred on July 6th 2005. The victim says she was at a neighbor's house on the Northern Highway when Mathews pulled up and forced into a car. She says she was taken to Mathews' home behind the Complex Building in Lake I where she was locked inside a room and held captive. She was rescued by the police.
At the beginning of the trial - the sodomy and rape charges were withdrawn. After the prosecution's case - Mathews' attorney Leo Bradley made a no case submission. Justice Adolph Lucas agreed to reduce the charge to common assault. The jury deliberated for four hours and returned a verdict of 8 to 1 to convict Mathews. He will be sentenced tomorrow.
