On Friday night, a distraught Christine Zetina made a tearful appeal for the arrest of Lenny Bennett, the man who shot her a week earlier. We don’t know if that made the difference, but this morning the Ladyville resident handed himself in to police. The news was welcomed by Zetina and her family who are battling with the prospect of a possibly debilitating injury. So today’s development was a spot of good news in a time of mostly bad news. Jacqueline Godwin caught up with the victim and her sister at the KHMH. She says that while she’s still down physically, emotionally she feels much better.
Christina Zetina, Shooting Victim
“Much better, that is all I wanted. I punish a lot in this bed. Pain, no sleep, no sleep.”
Florence Zetina, Sister of Shooting Victim
“That is very good, I am glad that he handed himself in.”
But Christina Zetina’s prognosis remains uncertain. According to the family the doctors still do not know if Christina will be able to walk normal again. Zetina says she still has no feelings in her left leg and foot.
Christina Zetina,
“No feelings, barely, just under toes when I touch it with the next
foot I feel it a little bit, like just slight slight – barely anything. If somebody else touches it I don’t really feel it.”
The family contends that Zetina and Bennett were just friends butt hat she was shot because he wanted to have a relationship with her after he had served a two year sentence at Hattieville Prison. Zetina says Bennett became jealous and obsessive when he found out that she was in a relationship.
Florence Zetina,
“Well I know how it goes when a guy likes a girl and the girl doesn’t like him and that was his intention, to be her boyfriend and she said no. He should have respected it. He didn’t have to shoot her.”
The family says based on what the doctors have told them Florence says she is trying to get money to help her sister receive the medical care she needs.
Florence Zetina,
“They are still saying that they are uncertain but you know until we can help that we need then we will know exactly. She needs a lot of more tests and the only way we can get them is through financial assistance.”
Christina says she would also like to thank the two young men who rushed her to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. She says all she knows is that they were in a Suzuki sidekick.
Christina Zetina,
“I want to see them before they go for further assistance and I want to ask the community to please help because only sister is working and she has a part time job. She is the only one by my side helping financially. I really want to ask the community for help with anything, just let me please get my foot back –the way how I use to have it because I don’t want to lose her foot. I just hope I will walk again, I just hope. I just lay down everyday and I hope I will walk again.”
As for Lenny Bennett, he was taken over to Magistrate’s Court where he has been charged with aggravated assault and attempted murder. Jacqueline Godwin for 7NEWS.
According to Christine Zetina, earlier on the day that she was shot Lenny Bennett had circled her residence threatening her. But when she called the Ladyville police for help she says they never came. Zetina says it was not until a third time when a policeman just happened to be passing in the area that a report was taken. So police were looking for him, but that night he came out of hiding and fired the shots that wounded Christina Zetina.
