A Chinese businessman and his wife were shot this evening and police say a disgruntled employee was the gunman. The shots rang out after 4 p.m. at the Belize Aluminum and Glass Company limited at mile 3 on the Northern Highway. Our team visited the scene a short while ago and spoke to the second in command of the Crimes Investigation Branch – Sgt. Hilberto Romero. He said details were scarce but told us what he knew.

Sgt. Hilberto Romero, 2nd in Command - CIB
“CIB responded to a report of persons being shot here and upon arrival the persons had been taken to the KHMH. The investigation is early at this stage and all we have is that there are two victims, Chinese nationals at the KHMH with gunshot wounds.”

Keith Swift,
Male or female?

Sgt. Hilberto Romero,
“A male and a female. It appears that it was an employee problem and the employee took out the firearm and fired gunshots at them.”

Keith Swift,
Any of the injuries life threatening?

Sgt. Hilberto Romero,
“I cannot say at this time. They are being attended at this time.”

Keith Swift,
So to backtrack, the employee shot the boss?

Sgt. Hilberto Romero,
“That is the information we are gathering, yes. The employee shot the boss and the wife.”

Keith Swift,
Do you know what they were arguing about?

Sgt. Hilberto Romero,
“No they speak Chinese and the employees here are mostly Hispanic persons and we could not ascertain what they were quarreling over.”

Keith Swift,
Has that employee been detained?

Sgt. Hilberto Romero,
“Yes, he has been detained at CIB at this time.”

Late reports are that the husband was shot to his hand and abdomen and his wife to her back. We’ll have more on the shooting tomorrow.
