He is a well-known and senior traffic officer at the City Council but tonight John Rivero Sr. is in the hospital in a serious condition. At 5 am on Sunday, the 57 year old was attempting to enter his home at the corner of Lakeview and Logwood Streets when he was shot. Police say the men wanted Rivero’s gun.
ACP Allan Whylie, Commander – Eastern Division
“He was about to enter his home when a shot was fired at him. He was able to open his door and got in safely where he was later transported to the hospital. We believe the motive was robbery because he is a licensed firearm holder and he had his weapon on him.
We have issued a warrant in the first instance for the arrest of Edwin Bardalez of a Mayflower Street address. I would like to urge licensed firearm holders to be especially vigilant and careful in respect to the movement with their firearms, their display, because we have had some indication that firearm holders will be targetted to acquire additional firearms for illegal purposes.
So I want to sound that warning to persons holding that awesome responsibility of being a firearm holder to exercise extreme caution in terms of their movements and the handling and the safe custody of their weapons.”
Rivero is still hospitalized in a stable condition.
