But first, crime news. Police have made a major arrest for the murder of two people in Bermudian Landing on Thursday night. 19 year old Karen Crawford and 44 year old Maurice Banner were killed at the home of Emmerson Wade, who is Crawford’s common law husband. Today the police held a press briefing to say that the man who they believe did it is 18 year old John Chessman.
If the name sounds familiar, it should. Chessman was the teenaged minor
accused of breaking into a home and killing the maid, by cutting her throat allegedly with a samurai sword. That was the accusation, but the case fell apart in court and he was acquitted. That was just two months ago. Since then, Chessman has been shot but survived, and now this, an accusation of double murder. Officer in Charge of the Crimes Investigation Branch Superintendent Aaron Guzman told the media more.
Supt. Aaron Guzman, Officer in Charge – CIB
“We believe that the motive behind this murder was drug related like we had said from our press release and that is what we still believe based on what the investigators found at the scene.
We have confirmed that he is one of the person that was there and took part in this double murder. We also know who are the three persons we are looking for and tell you that we have eyewitness account of the incident. I think I answered that earlier and said yes we have eyewitness account of the incident and that is the reason why Mr. Chessman has been arrested and charged.”
This afternoon John Chessman was appeared in front of Senior Magistrate Dorothy Flowers. No plea was taken and the case was adjourned for July 17. Chessman was remanded to prison where he joins his brother Robert Gillett who is awaiting a retrial for the murder of the maid two years ago. As he noted three other people are wanted for this murder. Like Guzman said, it was drug related and our sources say that’s why the gunmen ransacked the house after they killed Banner and Crawford: they were allegedly looking for drugs. Police say they have questioned wade two times.
