A Mennonite couple is dead and a mechanic lost his life following a triple traffic fatality on Tuesday afternoon in the Cayo District. San Ignacio police say the tragedy occurred around twelve forty five on route thirty east in Spanish Lookout Village. Investigations reveal that the mechanic Carlos Lopez, a resident of Duck Run was riding his motorcycle out of the Mennonite community. Anna and Jacob Klassen, residents of Spanish Lookout were also travelling in the same direction on their own motorcycle.
As the bikes reached a junction Jacob Klassen suddenly made a left turn at the same time that Carlos Lopez was overtaking the couple on his motorcycle. The impact was so great that all three were flung from their motorbikes.
Police say when they arrived on the scene they found that Anna Klassen and Carlos Lopez both had suffered fatal head injuries. Jacob Klassen was rushed to the western regional hospital but he died on the way. Police say none of the victims wore helmets and that likely contributed to their deaths.
7NEWS was informed that Anna and Jacob Klassen were to be married in three weeks.
