A road accident that happened yesterday has left three young college students feeling very lucky to be alive. The drama unfolded around twelve thirty in the afternoon when a Toyota Four Runner reportedly driven by eighteen year old Shawn Dominguez was heading towards the intersection of Princess Margaret and Coney Drives when it made contact with the sidewalk and careened into a lamp post. The impact was so great it snapped the lamp post in half knocking down its transformer and high tension wires – causing hours of blackout in the area. According to Ruperto Vicente, a teacher from Edward P. Yorke High School he was inside the school building situated next door when he first heard a loud bang.
Ruperte Vicente, Witness
“We were sitting in the staffroom along with a number of other teachers when we heard this loud bang and there was smoke as well and we saw students running all over the place and across the street and we were traumatized when we saw what happened.”
Jacqueline Godwin,
You came outside and what did you see?
Ruperte Vicente,
“There was such excitement that it brought us out of the staffroom and immediately we ran out and we didn’t think it was a vehicle because we didn’t see a vehicle and we saw the wires moving and we saw the post broken and the students came and asked if I saw the vehicle and we came out and we saw this vehicle here. Praise God the young men that were in this vehicle were not seriously injured because it was a terrible accident.”
Jacqueline Godwin,
I understand they are all students.
Ruperte Vicente,
“I understand they are students from SJC sixth form. I didn’t get to speak to them but they were all shaken. Certainly coming out of something like this without a scratch must be considered a blessing.”
Jacqueline Godwin,
Indeed because we also notice what is down is a high tension wire.
Ruperte Vicente,
“Along with the transformer as well and the way the vehicle is and breaking a lamppost and the transformer coming on top of this vehicle and these young men must consider themselves blessed.”
Belize City traffic police are investigating and told 7NEWS that more than likely charges will be brought against the driver.
