But we did manage to speak with Monica Escarpeta’s attorney Michael Peyrefitte. According to Peyrefitte just like the media he too does not know what charges will be levied against his client only that he can confirm that she is now in police custody and is expected to appear in Magistrate Court on Thursday. According to Peyrefitte he was hired to represent Monica Escarpeta on Monday and on Tuesday in his company she turned herself into the police.
Jacqueline Godwin,
“What is Monica Escarpeta being charged with?”
Mike Peyrefitte, Attorney for Monica Escarpeta
“That’s the problem Jackie. To this exact time she has not been charged. She is at the police station, I along with her, turned her in yesterday, took her to Mr. Martinez at about a quarter to twelve and Mr. Martinez detained her and she is still there pending investigation. So she has not been charged yet.”
Jacqueline Godwin,
“Why was she detained if there is

obviously no evidence against your client at this time?”
Mike Peyrefitte,
“Well I don’t know, that is a question for the police. The police, they detain, if they believe that some law has been broken. Obviously they believe that there is a possibility that some law was broken by Ms. Escarpeta. But unless they charge her, I wouldn’t know exactly what they believe.”
Jacqueline Godwin,
“What do you think about the police’s investigation so far into this case?”
Mike Peyrefitte,
“Well I don’t know, it’s not abnormal. Normally when the police want someone we turn them in, because my advice is always that if the police is looking for you just turn yourself, they are going to find you anyway and the police they have 48 hours to detain you before they charge you and that is what they are doing.”
Jacqueline Godwin,
“The family is claiming that their daughter, sister, is innocent, do you believe the charges that will be brought against her is bogus, she is being used as a scapegoat here?”
Mike Peyrefitte,
“Well to be fair we won’t know any of that unless we see the charges and until and unless we see the evidence to support the charges. So that will be at a time when they give disclosure and even if they charge her, like I said she hasn’t been charged yet. So there is a possibility that she will still not be charged but we don’t know.”
Jacqueline Godwin,
“But she’s your client so you must have been in discussion. Based on the information she has provided, can there be any charges levied against her?”
Mike Peyrefitte,
“Well first of all the conversation I have with my client is privileged so I can’t comment on that but at this stage the onus is on the police. They are the ones who bring the charge. My position is always well, we have to see what the police have to say. I mean if they have something to say, we will see it when they charge her.”
As we said the lead case investigator Sinquest Martinez has told the media that at this time he is not talking to the press and from what we gathered from Monica Escarpeta’s Attorney Michael Peyrefitte it will not be until sometime tomorrow morning that he will know what his client is being charged for but that she is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
