Tonight, the Customs Department is looking for the person who smuggled in a suitcase filled with 200 luxury cell phones at the Phillip Goldson International Airport.
The unmarked suitcase was found yesterday evening at the airport as the Customs Department staff was locking up the arrivals area. The suitcase was reportedly stowed behind the BTB booth. Acting on information received from a tipster, Customs searched for the suitcase and found it behind the BTB booth. The BTB staffer who is in charge of the booth was questioned, but not detained.
The BTB has issued a statement saying that the staffer has been an exemplary employee for the past 10 years and there is no reason for the BTB to believe she would be involved in a matter of this nature.
But someone was and that’s who the Customs Department is looking for tonight. Here’s how they believe it worked: someone affiliated with a local cell phone vendor flew into the country yesterday on an American Airlines flight and left the suitcase there – on the understanding that another person would come and pick it up. No one did and that’s where Customs came in. The phones are valued at approximately thirty thousand dollars.
