Accused child molester Keon Williams – aka Gambis – is in jail tonight and so too is the police officer he allegedly had to pay off to get out of jail. Today 35 year old Special Constable John Myvett was charged with extortion and obtaining services by deception. No plea was taken because the offences are indictable.

Police allege that after Gambis was arraigned on January 12th for sodomizing a 14 year old boy – Special Constable Myvett who escorted Williams from the Magistrate’s Courthouse to the Queen Street Police Station offered to secure bail for him for $3,000. Of course, it wasn’t any kind of real bail at all, just a corrupt offer for a “get out of jail” pass.

Williams allegedly told the Constable he only had $2,685 but Myvett accepted it and later released him from the detention cell at the police station. Police never made any announcement about Gambis’ flight from lawful custody until last week when the mother of his alleged victim appeared on 7News. Gambis was captured on Friday and Myvett turned himself into police later that evening along with his attorney Dickie Bradley.

Today in court the prosecutor objected to bail on the grounds that there is a prevalence of this behaviour by police officers, a concern that Special Constable Myvett would interfere with the witness, and thirdly that the investigation is ongoing and more charges could follow. Magistrate Kathleen Lewis denied bail on the third ground and remanded Myvett to prison until Thursday. There he will join Keon Gambis Williams who is now also in jail. It is not clear if he will be charged with escape.
