Last week, well known cardiologist Dr. John Gough was pilloried in the press – accused of badly beating up a 16 year old third form student who had been visiting with his daughter. The pictures showed Carlos Zelaya Junior’s bloodshot eyes and his father told us his son was unable to attend school because of the extent of his injuries. But why no charges? The Commissioner of Police and the Minister of National Security today addressed the issue saying that the matter has been sent to the DPP.
Crispin Jeffries, Commissioner of Police
“A complaint was made and the lapse between the time when the initial information was received and the time that the virtual complainant made his report leaves a lot to be desired of that individual if he is a complainant, he complained of injuries received. None the less because of the circumstances we took it to the point where we saw other advice. That is advice has come back, make charges, arrest and charge persons and we’ve done that today.”
Hon. Carlos Perdomo,
“My instructions to the Commissioner is you investigate well and I am using your words, I didn’t tell him this, but I don’t care if they are doctor. Once they break the law we will go with them.”
Jules Vasquez,
“So were you consulted on the investigation?”
Hon. Carlos Perdomo,
“No, never. But I would ask for updates because there were a lot of complaints out there. I would say how is this thing going Mr. Jeffries, are you investigating fully, they are going to prepare a report, they are going to send it to the DPP. I believe it was sent to the DPP and today they will be arrested and charged. That is how I work.”
The Police Press Officer this evening told 7News that Gough was charged and bailed. We cannot say that he was arraigned because as our court reporters could determine – up to mid-afternoon he had not been arraigned. This morning, Police told us he would present himself to police with his attorney. The Police Press Officer also reports that the Doctor is making a counter-complaint.
