BDF sergeant Enrique Montejo, who was found guilty of manslaughter by negligence for the death of 38 year old police corporal Raul Magana, was fined ten thousand dollars today in Corozal Supreme Court by Justice Dennis Hanomansingh. Montejo was also fined two thousand dollars for negligent grievous harm. He was ordered to pay compensation of three thousand dollars to each of the two persons who were injured in the accident. Montejo must pay the fines and compensation by November 15th.
Before he decided on the sentences, Justice Hanomansingh heard pleas for mitigation from three character witnesses and Montejo. The incident occurred in April 2006 in Rachito Village. Montejo was driving a car when it collided with another driven by Magana. Magana died on the spot. His wife and other members of his family who were with him in the car were injured. Montejo was found guilty on February 3rd.
