One man who did cause a death on the highway was fined for it today in court. 74 year old retired accountant Orlando Landy Espejo who was found guilty of manslaughter by negligence and negligent grievous harm last Friday, was fined ($10,000) ten thousand dollars for manslaughter by negligence and a thousand dollars for negligent grevious harm.
Justice Adolph Lucas gave Espejo until June of next year to pay the fines - if not he will serve 1t5 months in prison. On the afternoon of July 13, 2009, between miles 29 and 30 on the northern highway, Espejo was driving a Mazda car heading to Orange Walk when he collided with an Isuzu car driven by Vicente Rivera which was travelling in the opposite direction. Rivera died on the spot while his wife fractured her pelvis and sternum.
