He shot his brother, who threatened him with a machete, and tonight, 38-year-old Edwardo Perez is in police custody while investigators decide if he should be criminally charged.

Police say that at around 5:15 p.m. yesterday, they visited the Northern Regional Hospital, and that's where they found 32-year-old Silverio Perez, a resident of Trinidad Village in the Orange Walk District. He was suffering from a shotgun injury, which was allegedly inflicted by his older brother.

Initial investigation revealed that Edwardo Perez was at his home with his family in Trinidad when his brother, Silverio entered his yard. Silverio was reportedly armed with a machete, and he appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or some other drug.

Silverio allegedly shouted, 'I will kill you now.' That caused Edwardo to quickly pull his licensed shotgun, and he fired a shot at Silverio, which inflicted a non-life-threatening injury. After getting shot, Silverio Perez quickly ran away to a nearby cornfield, where he collapsed.

Police responded, detained Edwardo, and confiscated his licensed weapon. They are in the process of determining whether he should be criminally charged for the shooting or not.

The two brothers reportedly have an ongoing land dispute.
