Last night we brought you an update on the Gigi Gusenbauer saga and the heartwarming footage of the German expat's reunion with his beloved dog, both of them survivors of a brutal attack by coastal pirates.
It's a tragedy that might not have taken place had there been adequate policing of the waters around Placencia and its surrounding areas. And while it won't spare Gusenbauer any mental anguish there is an emerging silver lining to his story. That's because the harrowing incident has lead the Coast Guard to commit to maintaining a presence in the village. We got the official announcement yesterday from Acting Commandant Greg Soberanis.
Cherisse Halsall:
"Sir when we did that story in Placencia, residents made us very aware that law enforcement in Placencia as you rightly noted doesn't have access to a boat, does that change now is the coast guard going to be stationed there, do police get a boat, how is that going to be sorted?"
Gregory Soberanis, Acting Commandant
"I can tell you that the Coast Guard's presence will now be in Placencia. We are going to put a team in Placencia and we are going to be putting teams in strategic places along or in our coastal communities that are being affected and being terrorized by these criminal elements. So to answer your question yes there will be a Coast Guard presence in the Placencia area and that will come online very shortly."
