The Mobile Interdiction Team has struck again in the north. They seized 20 kilos of suspected marijuana, which was being smuggled in across the border into the Corozal District.
At around 11:00 last night, members of the MIT were on patrol in the San Jomal Area, looking for border jumpers when their attention was drawn to 2 flashlights coming from the direction of the lagoon. The officers investigated, and that's when they spotted a canoe docking on one of the landings. 2 men were seen unloading a large black bag from the canoe. The would-be smugglers then started heading in the direction of where the officers were located. At the very last minute, the officers made an attempt to intercept them by announcing that they were police. That led the two men to dive into the nearby bushes, and although the cops chased after them, they escaped.
The officers then searched the area, and that's when they found a large bale. They opened it up and found 20 parcels containing suspected marijuana. The drugs were transported to Corozal Town, and that's when the officers realized that the total cargo weighed 44.3 pounds.
Since the smugglers escaped, the drugs were deposited as found property.
The night before, the MIT also found a gun in the Postal Area of Corozal Town. The cops searched in some thick grass where a cardboard box was concealed. They found a 38 revolver inside the box. Again, it was labelled as food property.
