A traffic accident which led to the death of Miguel Ayala three years ago has resulted in half a million dollars in compensation for his family. On May 7, 2018, a BATSUB military vehicle crashed into Ayala's truck between miles 32 and 33 on the George Price Highway. The investigation later revealed that BATSUB's vehicle was at fault for driving in the wrong lane and the driver, Corporal Conner Dayne Edney was convicted of causing death by dangerous driving. But Ayala's family wasn't satisfied and sought compensation. The civil claim against Corporal Edney and the Ministry of Defence in the UK commenced in January 2020 and the matter was settled in excess of $542,000, inclusive of costs.
Since BATSUB has immunity in Belize, the case was brought in a court in the UK. Ayala's estate was represented locally by Mikhail Arguelles and Associates who instructed their UK counterparts, solicitors and barristers.
