But the Commissioner of Police wants to change the way the police are perceived and has taken steps to ensure that the latest set of recruits don't fall into the same patterns of abuse and hostile engagement with the public.
The new recruits have been given intense training unlike their predecessors, and the expectations are high that these recruits will lead the department down a more community-oriented route. Courtney Menzies was at their training session at the police training academy today, and has this story.
The ComPol noted that this is the first set of intakes that have at least a high school diploma, and added that some even have Bachelor's and Master's degrees.
