Another drug plane - the third in two weeks - landed early this morning in Belizean territory. This time - like the last - it was in southern Belize - but very close to the coast near the village of Monkey River.

But, this one is a Gulfstream G2 jet - capable of carrying about a tonne of cocaine.

The jet landed around 2:00 am on an island in the middle of a lagoon - making it difficult for police to respond. From there, the narcos used three vessels to ferry it to the sea, likely for northward carriage to Mexico.

When police arrived they found that the plane had been emptied of its drug cargo and the narcos only left behind an ATV and a wooden trailer. Today, via Zoom, the commissioner told the media how a small team of police were thwarted when they tried to respond:

Chester Williams - Commissioner of Police
"The plane went and came south and needed landed on a small island type area in the monkey river area. We had a team which was based about 10 miles away from where the plane landed but that was just a 4 man team. Notwithstanding that, the team attempted to go to the area where the plane landed but again they were met by spikes on the road and that disabled the vehicle from proceeding to the particular area."

Courtney Menzies did proceed to the remote area on foot today - it was a long trek and she is just getting back. We'll have her on the scene story coming up shortly.
