But, for the commissioner that kind of second guessing is wishful thinking. He says that - based on the evidence - it was either the life of the attacker or the police officer which would have been lost on that bridge:

"The question is we know that once it had gotten to that point where this individual was charging the officer, the officer had no choice but to fatally wound him, however, there were many police officers on that bridge, wasn't there a moment prior, where these officers could have gotten the situation under control to take that knife away without having to kill the individual?"
Chester Williams, Commissioner Of Police
"I don't know Cherisse if you were in that position, what would you have done? I am not, or I was not on the bridge to say what I would have done but certainly anybody in their right mind is not going to try and agrees a allegedly mad man with a knife because as much as you may say that they could have neutralized without using any neutral force, what would have happened if one of the officers jumped from off the railing of the bridge to where the individual was. It would take one simple move and he would stab and kill the police so police officers are humans. They have flesh, they bleed blood and it would take one simple move and we could have been the ones grieving the loss of one of our officers who would have been out there performing his duty to protect the public."
