We also asked the Fin Sec about the burglary at the Dangriga Treasury. At the end of March, thieves broke in and stole $39,157 dollars. They pried off the burglar bars and stole the iron vault. They stole taxpayer dollars, but weeks later, neither the government nor the police have put out any statement or information on this.
We asked the Fin Sec about it today:
Joseph Waight, Financial Secretary
"It was really distressing to hear that it was broken into over a long weekend. The investigation is in the hands of the police I don't know how many leads they have. You hear stories but those are stories you don't have any proof. What we're trying to do is find out what went wrong and try to close the gate you know and to make sure that not only the Dangriga sub-treasury but the other treasuries have a heightened level of security and protection it may mean having to hire round the clock guards I mean n addition to the camera systems and so we had there. We are assisting the police with what information we know. But really I understand that there is little to go on you know because you have to arrest and convict somebody before you get back the money"
Reporter:
"So the building.. What type of security system the building had before?"
Joseph Waight, Financial Secretary
"It had camera's, it had burglar bars but it didn't have armed guards at night and maybe the time has come I don't know. You have to look at each case individually ah. Our big buildings in Belize City is a high cost but you know at the same time we have to do what we have to do ah."
