Today, 26 year old Everald Martinez got his verdict in the case where he is accused of physically and sexually abusing his stepdaughter, 17 month old Alyssa Nunez - causing her death.
It was one of the most hideous cases we've ever reported on: the toddler was sexually molested, raped and bludgeoned with a blunt object leading to her death.
But, this afternoon Justice Ricardo Sandcroft ruled that he was not convinced beyond a reasonable doubt that Martinez committed the murder and so he found him not guilty.
Martinez high stepped out of the courtroom clutched by his family - tasting freedom for the first time since he was initially accused in 2018.
In his over 60 page ruling, Justice Sandcroft noted that there was no direct evidence, just circumstantial evidence and he had to examine every strand of evidence. When he did so, he found a reasonable doubt and could not convict Martinez.
Martinez was represented by Attorney Oscar Segado and Crown for the DPP's office was Porsha Staine-Ferguson.
