By now, we've probably all seen that shocking video of a police corporal groping and then slapping a woman constable inside the police station. It's outrageous in the extreme - but the truth is - if this newsroom hadn't put the video out there, it might have been totally swept under the rug. We say that because the incident happened from February 14th, and Corporal Durham Dawson was criminally charged on February 20th - and no one said anything.
Apparently, they didn't even say so to the police Ministry. We say that because the Ministry of Home Affairs just put out a statement today saying it is, quote, "deeply concerned about the…incident... involving Corporal Durham Dawson and a woman police officer who was a victim of sexual assault. In response to this reprehensible act, swift and decisive action has been taken."
And responding to the tone of the entire video where the violence seems to be normalized, the release goes unto say, "the Ministry acknowledges the need for profound cultural change within our law enforcement department. We are actively working towards fostering a culture of respect, dignity, and accountability within the ranks. We will closely monitor all situations to ensure that such incidents are eradicated from our institutions entirely."
