Jules Vasquez:
"With the numbers trending up again, is it maybe a failure in leadership in the police department, maybe your style of leadership, your tactics are no longer effective?"
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"So it's me committing the crimes, the shooting? Or it's me telling the police officers or the commanders not to police the area? If you move around the country, you will see that police officers are working. Again, one of the greatest misfortune that we have is the fact that some sectors of the media continue to want to blame the police or the government for the senseless or reckless behavior of criminals, and because of this, the criminal elements are emboldened to do what they are doing because they're not getting the blame for what they're doing. We must put the blame where they rightly belong. As I said before, the police are only a few in numbers compared to a community. The police have to move around. The criminals will find a way to do what they need to do. While the police try through preventative methods like patrolling, we charged a number of them for being a member of a gang, we successfully prosecute a number of them. If you if you want to be honest, you will also see that there is an increase in murder convictions. So in terms of looking at the the effectiveness of the police, it is there, nobody could quantify the amount of lives the police save every day by conducting preventative patrols, by taking guns off the streets, by charging gang members for being a member of a gang by solving a murder. These are all factors that contributes to saving lives, but that is not quantified. People only see what the criminals do, and because of that, they try to blame the police."
"There is a societal issue that is beyond the police that needs to be addressed, and it is not the police to address it. It is not the the government per se, but it must always start in the home. While a home has a lot to do, if the home would do its job, then it will help the other sectors that are supposed to do their part to fall in and have a better society. But we have to stop this thing where we will not to blame the criminals for what they're doing and try to put the blame on somebody. Like if your son go and do something unbeknownst to you and they try to blame you, it's not right. Right. And in this case is even worse because then I'm not their father, it's not me who raised them."
